Persimmon on Hand (2007). Les mises en scène ludiques de l’artiste, qui relèvent le plus souvent de la performance, font des croisements entre corps humain, aliments ou autres objets du quotidien. De manière implicite, elles parlent d’accueil, de tolérance, d’altruisme. Ici, l’œuvre fait un clin d’œil à peine voilé à la main de Fatma avec son œil protecteur, symbole de bienveillance sur le monde du vivant.

C’est dans l’expérience du quotidien que Chih-Chien Wang puise son inspiration. D’une part, des objets domestiques et des personnages issus de son univers intime, de l’autre des références au paysage et à la nature morte; des éléments qui font partie chez lui d’une même famille symbolique et qui construisent des fables à partager. Photographiés individuellement et le plus souvent extraits de leur contexte, les sujets sont presque théâtralisés, magnifiés, devenant chacun l’expression allégorique d’un monde en soi. Avec une saisissante simplicité, l’artiste nous invite à imaginer la trame narrative sous-jacente, hors des cadres associatifs habituels.

They implicitly speak of welcome, tolerance, and altruism. Here, the work is a barely concealed nod to the hand of Fatma, with its protective eye, symbol of benevolent vigilance over the world of the living.

Chih-Chien Wang draws his inspiration from daily life – on the one hand, domestic objects and people from his private world; on the other hand, references to landscape and still life, elements that for him are part of a single symbolic family and that build myths to share. Photographed individually and usually removed from their context, the subjects are magnified, almost theatricalized, each becoming an allegorical expression of a world in itself. With striking simplicity, Wang invites us to imagine the underlying narrative plot, outside of the usual associated frameworks.
